...And 25,000 Reasons to Rethink Recruitment

CV Fatigue

When we arrived at CapeBPO: A Day of 1,000 Opportunities, the scale of what lay ahead became clear almost immediately.

This initiative, driven by the City of Cape Town, was designed to connect unemployed youth with real job opportunities in the BPO sector. The expectation was around 1,500 attendees.

More than 25,000 young people showed up. It was both heartbreaking and deeply inspiring.

Heartbreaking, because the sheer number of unemployed youth is a stark reminder of the challenges facing South Africa. Inspiring, because it showed just how hungry young people are for opportunity—and how important initiatives like this are in creating access to employment and hope.

It also demonstrated the willingness of our city, businesses, and industry leaders to step up and drive meaningful change.

Pivotal Talent partnered with Trilogy BPO to do what we do best: help people find the right job.

At first, like everyone else, we waited for candidates to come to our stand. But it quickly became clear that many would never make it there—not because they lacked interest, but simply because the volume of people made it nearly impossible.

So, we changed our approach. We went to them.

We engaged with small groups—sometimes up to 50 people at a time—sharing something simple, yet powerful:

With just one click, using only 20KB of data, candidates could access a free 30-minute assessment designed to identify where they would thrive in the BPO environment.

Not just any role—the right role.

Whether that meant customer service for UK clients, debt collection for a South African public entity, helpline support, inbound or outbound roles, voice or text-based work, or even technical support positions—the goal was the same: alignment.

Because the right fit changes everything.

What makes this approach different is that we do not start with experience.

In fact, after more than 60 years of research, we know that experience is often a poor predictor of future performance. Yet traditional recruitment still places enormous weight on CVs and past roles.

Instead, we focus on what actually matters:

·        Potential.

·        Skills.

·        Interests.

·        Behaviour.

·        The ability to thrive.

In just 30 minutes—completely free—candidates could discover where they are most likely to succeed.

This matters because the world of work is changing faster than ever. Industries are evolving, technology is accelerating, and job opportunities are shifting constantly.

Yet recruitment often still looks the same as it did decades ago. The young people we met that day deserve better.

  • They deserve access to opportunities that recognise their potential—not just their experience.

  • They deserve a system that opens doors, creates visibility, and connects them directly to the right recruiters and employers.

Most importantly, this should not only happen at events like this.

With mobile-first access and minimal data usage, this opportunity can reach thousands more—from the comfort of their homes, without the cost of transport or the barriers of physical access.

That day was never just about 1,000 opportunities.

·        It was about 25,000 stories.

·        25,000 dreams.

·        25,000 reasons to rethink how we connect people to work.

And if there is one thing we left with, it is this:

The talent is there. It is everywhere.

We simply need better ways to find it.
